More Photography

It's been a rather hectic week, and in fact I can't believe so much has been squeezed into it. Mainly work-related activities for me and that seems to have been taking alot of my concentration and time, but Rachel had her interview with Blackpool for a place on the photography degree course and I'm sure there were other things going on aswell (I must *try* and keep this blog up to date then I have a record of what has been happening in my life).

This weekend was equally packed with two photoshoots on Saturday in York. One of these was to give Rachel's new sword an outing and the other to get some images for the webzine. Of course both were intended to be fun, and they were, both models, Freya, and Lizzie were fabulous to photograph, they both look amazing and are so friendly, chatty, and just wonderful to work with.

I should say that I don't have anything to do with organising the shoots or the styling on the day; all of that is down to Rachel; she sets everything up for the shot and I'm just so lucky to be there at the time to be able to take advantage of the opportunity and get take my own pictures! Really, I have such a long way to go with this, but it's so much good fun that it's worth doing all the practice necessary to get better.

I need to do more practice now since I went and purchased an upgrade to my existing camera (a Canon 350D) I've now got a Canon 5d which is going to take me a while to get to grips with. Rachel got some amazing pictures with it on Saturday afternoon and I also managed to take some of Lizzie which I'm very happy with.

Here's links to the latest pictures I've taken

I'm so jealous! I. So desperately want to upgrade my 350d with the 5d also. After some recent surgery (results which I'm happy with) I am going to have to put the camera upgrade on hold for now. Nice fowl pics!

Honestly, I'm probably more jealous of you having surgery! Me buying gadgets is a way of forgetting about everything else - really I should be prioritising things a little differently but I guess I'm thinking short term.

Well, I'd offer to let you borrow the camera to try it out but that is slightly impractical given the distance! Have to say though that I got some fantastic pictures with the 350D and a 50mm lens in the morning so I guess it's more a matter of glassware and being in the right place at the right time. I'm just hoping I can do the 5d justice and take shots that stretch the features of the camera and myself ... must get out and about more so I can see more things to snap ... wish I was travelling to US/Canada/etc again, there are some FAB places I'd love to photograph! That said there are some wonderful locations in the UK too!

You'll have to let me know any photo tips you have - I need all the help I can get!

WOW, just looked at your photo blog, the pictures are amazing! Will certainly be referring to that for inspiration and ideas :)

Hah, thanks for the compliments. I've been shooting still images as a passion for over ten years now, not surprisingly when my first child was born.

The 350D coupled with great lenses can still give some pretty impressive results. The glasses I use are: 50mm f 1.8 Macro, two wide angle L series lenses (a 17mm-40mm I think), a telephoto lens that reaches 300mm. You can see a lot of other images on my Facebook page, but I'm not fond of the low resolution Facebook uses to view photos.

I'm sure once you figure out all that can be done with the 5D you'll do just fine with it. I can't wait to see more images! You should consider a photo blog just for your work!

Okay, seriously jealous of the L-series lenses, the 17-40mm sounds fab - expensive here though £600!

I am REALLY jealous of the 70-300 you have (you mentioned it on your blog somewhere), a friend of mine has leant me their's and I had had a quick try with it and it was amazing - really need to get out and give it a proper exercise!

I've currently got a 50mm f1.4 lens (which I love for the portrait stuff) and a 80-200mm which is from a 35mm film camera but obviously works on the 5d (it's not IS or anything fancy though).

I'm using DeviantART to upload my pics (well the ones I think are good enough) in full resolution; have a look at the few from the 5d here:

There's only the four of Lizzie so far but I'm hoping to get out at lunchtime and wander round York University again :)
